HTC One : The gorgeous HTC One is a winner

HTC has announced the successor to this 2013 model, the HTC One (M8).HTC aims for the top with its gorgeously crafted, high-powered firework of an Android phone.

The Good

The HTC One flaunts a stunning metal design, a powerful quad-core processor, and a beautiful 4.7-inch, 1080p screen. It runs Android Jelly Bean, takes great pictures, and has a feature-packed camera app.

The Bad

The sealed case design means no SD expansion slot or user-replaceable battery. The BlinkFeed software can’t be completely removed.

The Bottom Line

A few quibbles notwithstanding, the powerhouse HTC One is a beautifully crafted, near-ideal smartphone.

Revisiting the HTC One (M7) in 2021 - YouTube

As HTC’s new flagship smartphone, the HTC One is packed to the rafters with top-notch components and technologies including some of the latest processing gear from Qualcomm. In addition to being state-of-the-art, the successor to 2012’s HTC One X is lovingly crafted from premium metals, leaving no doubt that the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer has put a considerable amount of blood, sweat, and tears into this handset.
HTC definitely brought its A game, and it needs to to defeat its archrival, the Samsung Galaxy S4. Like all other smartphones though, the One isn’t perfect — it lacks an SD card slot for extra storage expansion as well as a removable battery. The camera isn’t quite as revolutionary as advertised. Android purists may not love HTC’s Sense UI skin, and the One’s nonremovable BlinkFeed news reader isn’t particularly welcome.
Quibbles aside, though, the HTC One should be at or near the top of the list for anyone looking for a phone on Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon — where it’s going head-to-head with the Galaxy S4. Yes, it’s a game of inches between both of those big-screen Android superphones . But I can easily say the HTC One is the fastest, most beautiful phone I’ve ever used, and it will sway anyone looking for a worthy alternative to the Samsung GS4.

>>>B600BC Battery for Samsung Galaxy S4 I9500 I9508 I9505 I9507V

Design

Rectangular, flat, and extremely thin, the HTC One is practically all screen. Its 4.7-inch (1080p) LCD display uses what the company calls SoLux technology for improved picture quality and generates 468 pixels per inch (ppi). This, says HTC, helps the One’s screen boast the most impressive viewing experience of any phone it has ever created. Since the display is slightly smaller at the same resolution, the One’s screen has a denser pixel count than the Droid DNA (5-inch, 440ppi). The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy S4, which uses a larger 5-inch OLED screen (441ppi).

I can certainly verify that the One’s display has impact, with vibrant colors, wide viewing angles, and plenty of brightness. Details also look extremely crisp, which makes me eager to compare the One’s display against that of the Galaxy S4. I suspect that Samsung’s latest monster will offer higher contrast and brighter colors, but the jury is still out until I place both handsets side by side.
HTC also makes a big deal about the One’s all-aluminum chassis, describing it as using a zero-gap unibody design. Indeed, available in black and silver, the handset feels sturdy, with reassuring heft, and its smooth, metallic skin exudes high-end craftsmanship. HTC also took pains to point out that while the thin, white trim encircling the silver model I manhandled appears to be plastic, it is, in fact, metal.

HTC One

Measuring 5.4 inches tall by 2.7 inches wide by 0.37 inch thick, the HTC One is certainly a handful. Tipping the scales at 5.04 ounces, it’s by no means lightweight either. I recommend stuffing the One into large, or at least secure, pockets to tote around town.
The One’s speakers do pack a hefty punch, producing rich audio with a satisfying helping of bass. The phone’s audio system has wide stereo separation as well, plus a surprising amount of volume.
In fact I found that I could rely on the One’s speakers in a pinch when my portable Bluetooth speakers weren’t handy. While nowhere near as loud as, say, a Jawbone Jambox or Jabra Solemate, the phone provides enough audio oomph for small groups in quiet rooms.
Above the display sit a 2.1MP front-facing camera and a notification light. Below are just two capacitive Android buttons, while a headphone jack and volume button are up top. What’s really interesting is how the power button also doubles as an IR blaster to control home theater equipment. A volume rocker is placed on the right side, and a SIM card slot holds court on the left. On the bottom edge sits the phone’s Micro-USB port. Around back is the 4MP main camera with LED flash, which also uses HTC’s UltraPixel sensor.

Software, UI, and features

The HTC One has all the power of modern Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean at its disposal. currently 4.2, but you do get all the tight integration with Google’s wide range of software and services that modern Android phones enjoy. These include Gmail, Google+ social networking, Google Talk, Google Drive, and so on, plus access to over 700,000 apps for download through the Google Play store.
Layered on top of Android is yet another version of HTC’s Sense UI. As is typical of this sort of added interface, the latest version of Sense offers more enhancements you may or may not find useful.
The first is something HTC calls the BlinkFeed, a main home screen consisting of dynamic tiles that display content from a wide variety of news outlets, blogs, and Web sites (including CNET). If you’re familiar with popular news aggregators such as Flipboard and Pulse, then you get the idea.
There are drawbacks to BlinkFeed that you should be aware of, most notably that you can’t turn the feature off, at least not entirely. By default the BlinkFeed screen is set as the phone’s primary home screen. You can, however, select any of the HTC One’s home screens as its starting point.
Another annoyance I ran into is that BlinkFeed pulls content from a stable of vetted sources. While that’s fine for casual news viewing, you’ll probably run into roadblocks trying to tweak it to display more-targeted outlets.

I admit that I like the revamped Sense user interface. Besides BlinkFeed, the skin has a cleaner look with icons that are less crowded across and within the app tray. Also odd is that unlike in stock Android Jelly Bean, the app tray doesn’t side-scroll; it scrolls vertically. The scrolling motion also jumps through icons by the page, not smoothly at a set rate, which takes getting used to.
Gone is HTC’s iconic weather clock widget, which has graced its phones since way back in the days of Windows Mobile. You will still find information about time and weather forecasts at the top of the home screen, but displayed in a much more low-key fashion. An icon here and on the lock screen displays current conditions by taking the shape of a sun, clouds, and so on. It will even blink at you with eye-catching animations such as falling rain or snow.

HTC One

Battery life
An embedded 2,300mAh battery serves as the One’s power source, which I admit doesn’t sound like much on paper, especially compared with phones with ultra-high-capacity batteries such as the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD (3,300mAh). Of course the HTC Droid DNA managed a long 8 hours and 43 minutes on the CNET Labs video battery drain test with a smaller 2,020mAh battery.
In terms of longevity, though, the HTC One didn’t disappoint. The phone beat out the Droid DNA on the same test, lasting a full 9 hours and 37 minutes when subjected to the official CNET Labs video battery drain benchmark.

Conclusion

In the One, HTC has created a premium phone that’s fast and thin, and which flaunts a drop-dead gorgeous design. In my experience, the phone’s screen and its camera largely live up to the hype, though the camera’s low-light performance is a bit oversold.

I was surprised, however, by how much fun I found the phone’s Highlight video function to be. Sure, shooting Zoe videos is limited because it uses a proprietary file format. The Highlight movies, on the other hand, are convertible and much easier to share. It also resulted in me capturing one of my best phone videos ever.

The new Huawei MateBook X Pro is the MacBook Air killer I always wanted

Early Verdict

The new MateBook X Pro keeps that same alluringly minimalist design and pitch-perfect ergonomics, while seriously upgrading the display and internals. Outside of this laptop yearning for Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite.

Huawei’s laptops have always been known for being sleek, but the newest one, the 2024 MateBook X Pro, really takes it up a notch. This Intel Core 9 Ultra-powered, 14.2-inch screen laptop weighs only 980g and measures only 13.5mm.

Pros

  • +Visually alluring, durable design
  • +OLED display is mesmerizing
  • +Touchpad and keyboard are best in class

  • +Powerful Intel Core Ultra performance…
Cons

  • -Expensive at (potentially) £1,799

The Huawei MateBook X Pro has been an underrated ultraportable over the past couple of years. In fact, last year’s model is my favorite laptop of the year .
We also talk about how the display on the super thin MacBook is “bright and colorful,” but the 14.2-inch flexible OLED panel here is simply jaw-dropping from every angle. Chalk that down as another check in Huawei’s column.

The keyboard feels better to type on, the trackpad is arguably the best I’ve ever used with its elegant surface and software trickery. The Morandi Blue magnesium alloy is head and shoulders above the MacBook Air — both in terms of eye-catching color and its resistance to fingerprints.

Plus, we can’t go any further without talking about that weight. I expected a little heft — like the 2.7-pound MacBook Air is by no means heavy, but you can feel its weight. At 2.2 pounds, this CNC Unibody is lightweight unlike anything I’ve felt before.

Huawei MateBook X Pro (2024): Cheat sheet
  • What is it?A powerful, thin and light Windows notebook
  • Who is it for?For the hard workers on the go — needing something ultraportable to get intense creative work done, while needing a good screen for watching videos during long trips.
  • What do we like?At 2.2 pounds, it’s the lightest laptop I’ve ever used — but it doesn’t skip on the power with an Intel Core Ultra 9 and 32GB DDR5 RAM. This all keeps images superfluid on that drop-dead gorgeous OLED touchscreen display, and the attention paid to the delicate keyboard and gigantic touchpad is unmatched.
  • What don’t we like?Expect this to be expensive. On top of that, the 40W TDP of the Intel chip (while good for performance) does mean the battery takes a little bit of a hit.

Ridiculously good looking

The same magnesium alloy shell returns (something that Huawei calls the “skin-soothing metallic body”) — carved into this curved, utilitarian shape that looks unmistakably luxurious from every angle. And this new lighter blue finish adds an alluring dash of personality to the otherwise minimalist elegance.
On top of that, this thing is durable. I’m not saying it’s like those ultra-rugged systems that you see people drop from great heights (please don’t do that), but the rough-yet-smooth surface covering the laptop has undergone a Micro-arc oxidation process to improve water resistance. What this translates into is a laptop that’s impressively resistant to fingerprints and stains.
Funny story: the reviewer’s guide every journalist received with a new product they’re testing suggested that I spill coffee on the surface, which immediately terrified me. But the photos you are looking at here were taken after I did indeed spill some prime Costa Rican dark coffee on the lid and wiped it off. Not a single bit of staining, and no fingerprints even when I was eating some Monster Munch

Unmatched ergonomics

It’s not just about the tools. It’s about how you use them, and the Huawei MateBook X Pro is a key example of that — offering arguably the best typing and clicking experience I’ve ever used on a Windows laptop.
The subtle dish of every key paired with 1.5mm of travel and a soft-yet-tactile landing of each key leads to a delightful typing experience, which matches the ergonomic greatness of the MacBook Air/Pro.
But let’s talk about the massive touchpad that goes all the way up to the bottom edge like an infinity pool. Following in Apple’s footsteps, there’s no actual mechanical click, as it’s all a solid-state construction. The haptic motor mimics clicks with a strong crispness, which gives you a gorgeous response to every interaction.
Instead, it’s edge controls! The left edge controls screen brightness, the right changes the volume, and moving across the top will scrub back and forth through videos. Once you experience it, you’ll find it hard to go back to any other laptop — it’s kind of a “why doesn’t everybody do this” kind of innovation that I love.
You’ve also got other gesture controls, such as knocking to take a screenshot or start a recording, but I’ll cut to the chase. This continues to be the best touchpad/keyboard combination I’ve ever used on a laptop.

A true feast for the eyes and ears

The older X Pro models were already a joy to watch movies and listen to songs on, but Huawei has gone a step further with four simple letters: OLED. Put simply, this 14.2-inch display is a masterpiece to the eyes.

Pairing a super sharp 3.1K resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate, this tall, crispy screen is a color-accurate joy to work on with up to a 1000-nit peak brightness. In all the lighting conditions I threw at this.

And my word what a sight it is. The vibrant colors melt off the screen and the 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio adds real depth to my time watching 3 Body Problem. But probably most surprising is the six-speaker setup here.

Whenever I see a laptop this skinny, tinny audio is sort of assumed of it. However, with impressive bass and a great, surrounding soundstage of well-balanced highs and mids, these speakers can overwhelm any time the fans kick up nicely.

Huawei MateBook X Pro (2024): Verdict

If you come at the king, you best not miss, and Huawei has come correct with the MateBook X Pro — putting the M3 MacBook Air on notice. Matching its performance, while being lighter, packing a gorgeous OLED panel, and the best keyboard/touchpad combo I’ve used on a Windows laptop, Apple is clearly in its sights and the shot’s been taken.

Ryzen and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops – not an easy relationship when it comes to the 2024 generation of ThinkPad laptops. Many of the newest ThinkPad laptops are not available with AMD CPU. In previous years, things very different. An example is the Lenovo ThinkPad X13. The smallest variant of the mainstream Lenovo business series ditched AMD this year, the new ThinkPad X13 Gen 5 features Intel’s Core Ultra Series 1 exclusively.

That is the reason why we are taking a look at the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 AMD with Ryzen 7000 today, the newest model with an AMD processor.

Chassis: Compact carbon/magnesium construction

With the ThinkPad X13 Gen 4, Lenovo has introduced a new design last year that already foreshadowed many new features of the 2024 ThinkPads. An example is the webcam bump, a rather controversial design choice. In any case, it makes opening the screen easier. Other design elements still follow the more classic ThinkPad design ethos, such as the silver hinges. With the 2024 ThinkPads, Lenovo has changed the hinge color to black – same for the ThinkPad logo.

Typical for the X13 series are the materials used here: Magnesium and aluminum for the lower half of the laptop, plastic with carbon-fiber reinforcement for the screen. Stability is great, as the whole device is well-made and almost completely painted black.

The two small drop down hinges do not allow for one-handed opening, but they securely hold the screen. There is no display-wobble. The maximum opening angle is 180 degrees.

The 13.3-inch business laptops in our comparison are all similarly heavy and have a similar footprint. Only the Dell Latitude 7350is smaller and a little bit more lightweight than the competition.

      Dell Latitude 13 7350 DIN A4 1.1 kg 2.37 lbs

     Security

Despite the ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 being so small, Lenovo manages to put in quite a few security features into this compact ThinkPad laptop. The subnotebook has a Kensington lock slot for theft protection, a fingerprint reader and an infrared camera for Windows Hello as well as a Smartcard reader – a secure log-in option for enterprise customers. Additionally, the ThinkPad has a dedicated TPM security chip and a mechanical privacy shutter for the webcam.

    Accessories

Aside from the 65 W GaN charger with a USB-C connector, Lenovo does not include any other accessories with the ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 AMD.

   Maintenance

Lenovo makes it for the user: Five screws and a few clips at the back edge of the system have to be loosened to remove the bottom cover and uncover the internals. Unfortunately, the ThinkPad laptop does not provide many upgrade options, as the RAM and Wi-Fi module are soldered down. At least, the 4G/LTE module can be added later, and the SSD is modular too. Positive: The internal battery is secured with a few screws and the fan is easily accessible too. On the other hand, changing the keyboard necessitates removing all other components – this used to be easier with theThinkPad X13 Gen 3 AMD.

   Sustainability

Some chassis parts of the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 consist out of recycled materials. The keyboard frame, for example, is made out of 90 percent recycled magnesium. Completely compostable are the packaging materials that Lenovo uses for newer ThinkPads like the X13 Gen 4. As usual for business laptops, Lenovo produces spare parts for a few years, same is true for software updates. Also, Lenovo supplies video tutorials and the hardware maintenance manual that explain how the device can be disassembled and reassembled.

   Warranty

As with most ThinkPads above the cheaper E and L models, Lenovo gives the X13 Gen 4 a three-year warranty that also applies world-wide. If the device stops working, it has to be sent in. Optionally, the warranty can be upgraded to on-site service as well as prolonged for an up to five-year period.

  Input devices: ThinkPad X13 G4 with a 95 % keyboard
Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4: Keyboard

As usual with 13.3 inch ThinkPads, Lenovo integrates a smaller keyboard. The key size is equal to a 95 percent keyboard, meaning each key is times 0.95 as big as on a full-size keyboard. The difference: Roughly one millimeter in both length and width. Also, some keys on the right side of the keyboard are additionally squished, and the dedicated insert key is nowhere to be found. The F keys are also shorter than with bigger ThinkPads. Otherwise, the backlit keyboard (two levels) does not differ too much from a typical ThinkPad keyboard. Key travel sits at 1.5mm, with the typing feel being very comfortable – typing on this keyboard is a nice feeling. One change on newer 2024 ThinkPads that did not hit the X13 series yet: The FN key still has its “normal” position here, to the left of the Ctrl key. The newer designs switch those keys around.

The touchpad and TrackPoint are similar to what Lenovo uses in other recent ThinkPads, with the touchpad being a little bit smaller here. The surface is made out of Mylar plastic, as with most ThinkPad laptops. It offers smooth gliding, but it gets dirty fast and does not feel as nice as a comparable glass surface. Usability is very good despite that. Other than the fact that its size is limited, it is a good touchpad. For some tasks, like drag and drop or when using the laptop in a tight space, the TrackPoint can be the better option for moving the cursor. In the X13 Gen 4, the TrackPoint worked flawlessly. The same is true for the dedicated TrackPoint buttons between the keyboard and touchpad.

  Connectivity: WWAN is upgradeable

As an enterprise laptop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X13 Gen 4 sports a good amount of ports, despite its small size. Among the connectors are two USB-A ports and full-size HDMI. Compared with Dell’s offering, the ThinkPad has one USB-A port more.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Motorola Razr Plus 2024: design

These two phones conform to the same clamshell form factor. They’re two full-sized yet slim phones that can fold over at the halfway point, making them into a more compact yet obviously much thicker bundle.

At 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9mm when open, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the smaller of the two in every way. There isn’t an awful lot in it though, with the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 measuring 171.4 x 74 x 7.1mm. Samsung’s phone is 0.4mm thicker when closed, though it’s also 2g lighter at 187g.

It’s in the fit and finish where these phones set out their differences. At a basic level, the Galaxy Z flip 6 is harder and more industrial-looking, with a flat, sharp-edged aluminum rim and a matte finish. There’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covering the whole of the external area.

The Flip 6 undoubtedly feels sturdy, though, with a reinforced hinge design and a bolstered IP48 rating. That makes it more resistant to small physical items like hair and lint than the Razr, which has to make do with IPX8 certification.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Motorola Razr Plus 2024: displays

Both of these foldable phones give you a pair of screens: one full-sized internal one, and one smaller external display for heads-up notifications.

In keeping with its slightly larger body, the Motorola Razr Plus 2024 goes bigger in both departments. Its inner screen is a 6.9-inch FHD+OLED, while the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s equivalent is a 6.7-inch FHD+ OLED.

There isn’t all that much in it, but the Motorola also gives you an elevated 165Hz refresh rate to the Flip 6’s 120Hz. It feels a little like overkill if we’re being honest, especially with a need to conserve energy on such space-constrained devices. Still, an advantage is an advantage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Motorola Razr Plus 2024: cameras

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 makes one particularly meaningful improvement on its predecessor, adding a new 50MP main sensor to the package. We say ‘new’, but it’s actually the same sensor that the Galaxy S24 has, which wasn’t even a new component at its launch in January.

The Razr Plus 2024 features a 50MP main camera, and the sensor is a tad smaller than its rival’s. It too captures good shots in decent lighting, though it does tend to punch colors up a little – just as the Flip 6 does.

It’s with the secondary cameras that the real contrast arises. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 goes for a traditional (and quite unremarkable) 12MP ultra-wide, while the Razr Plus 2024 makes the unusual decision to supply a 50MP 2x telephoto camera.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Motorola Razr Plus 2024: performance and software

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a clear advantage in the performance category. It uses a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset, while the Razr Plus 2024 is powered by the objectively weaker Snapdragon 8s Gen 3.

Some explanation is required here. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset is the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but with a higher clock speed to its CPU and GPU. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is a cut-down version of the same chipset, with a lower clock speed for its fast core, a downgraded configuration for the slower cores, and an inferior GPU.

To boil it down to a sentence: the Flip 6 runs on a slightly faster version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Razr Plus 2024 runs on a significantly slower version of the same chipset.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 vs Motorola Razr Plus 2024: verdict

We don’t think you’ll be disappointed with either the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 or the Motorola Razr Plus 2024. These are the two classiest compact foldable phones on the global market right now.

Their basic designs are much the same, though small details matter here. The cheaper Razr Plus 2024 is warmer and comfier to hold, while the Flip 6 is sharper, tougher, and slightly more compact. Motorola’s phone has the more impressive dual-screen provision, too, with a larger and more fluid main screen and a way more useful cover display.

Xiaomi Mi 11 vs. Xiaomi Mi 10: Comparison

Part 2: Mi 10 vs. Mi 11: Display, Design

Mi 11 adopts a new look than its predecessor Mi 10 on the camera setup. While the Mi 11 comes with triple cameras on the rear, Mi 10 boasts a quad-camera layout. The rear cameras’ shape appears pill-shaped on the new model, while the Mi 10 features a square-shaped square shaped module. The general display design seems to be curved on the edges.

The Mi 11 packs a 6.81-inch 2K AMOLED display. The resolution of 1440×3200 pixels is accompanied by the pixel density of 515ppi, 120Hz refresh rate, and 480Hz touch sampling rate. The new device panel supports new features such as motion estimation, HDR10+, DCI-P3 color gamut, and is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass.

On the other hand, the Mi 10 comes with a 6.67-inch, 3D curved E3 AMOLED and full HD+ display. The device supports a slightly reduced refresh rate of 90Hz and a touch sampling rate of 180Hz. The resolution for the Mi 10 is 1080×2340 pixels, which is better compared to older Xiaomi devices.

Part 3: Mi 10 vs. Mi 11: Camera

Both Mi 10 and Mi 11 come with an incredible camera setup that seems appealing to photography enthusiasts, except that the devices demonstrate slight differences in the camera specs. The Mi 11 comes with triple cameras, including 108MP primary camera that supports optical image stabilization. The camera sensor on the Mi 11 is at least x3.7 bigger than what iPhone 12 offers. Users can record 8K videos and better shots with this device. The primary camera is paired with a 13MP camera with ultra-wide-lens designed with 123degrees FOV. The rear camera also includes a 5MP camera with a tertiary sensor.

The Mi 10 comes with a quad-camera setup in the back. The primary camera features a 108MP sensor paired with a 13MP wide-angle lens with a broader field of view of 123 degrees, and a 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensor. Both Mi 10 and Mi 11 consist of a 20MP front camera, which consists of incredible photography features such as Exposure Verification, LOG Mode, Focus Peaking, and HEIF Support.

Mi 10 vs. Mi 11: Performance

The Xiaomi Mi 11 is the first smartphone the company has ever designed to run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, a processor used with high-end phones in 2021. The device also comes with the latest android operating system, android 11. The device is equipped with high-quality dual speakers tuned by the famous audio brand Harman Kardon, which also adjusts many Samsung audio systems. Mi 11 also supports Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and WiFi 6E. The general performance is appealing with the 8GB of RAM, which is big enough to run intense graphics and heavy apps.

On the other hand, the Mi 10 is powered by a powerful processor called Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 with Adreno 650 GPU. The device packs 8GB OF RAM and 125/256GB storage to turning it into a smooth performer. The Mi 10 contains a multi-level cooler solution to keep the device components cool, especially in gaming. Besides running on android 10, Mi 10 supports the fastest wireless network technology that is 5G networks. The phone demonstrates completely high connectivity when it comes to WiFi bands and mobile data in the 5G coverage area. It also packs stereo speakers offering an enhanced audio experience.

Part 4: Mi 10 vs. Mi 11: Battery life and charging

The Mi 11 comes with an adequate battery capacity of 4600mAh, although this is not the most significant capacity Xiaomi has ever packed in their devices. The battery life supports most tasks and connectivity of the phone for long hours. As mentioned earlier in the article, the Mi 11 comes with high-end specs such as HDR quality with extreme frame rates. Switching the phone to higher performance mode will likely drain the battery faster, and this might require at least two charges a day. As demonstrated in this device, the battery life is not significant compared to the Mi 10. However, the device comes with top-notch charging capabilities of 55W wired and 50W wireless charging. You will not have to worry about the time consumed during recharging the device as it could take 40 minutes to fill up to 100% when fast charging it.

On the other hand, the Mi 10 packs a bigger battery capacity of 4780mAh. The battery supports 30W proprietary fast charging, which makes a big difference with the Mi 11. However, Xiaomi integrated the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 with the Mi 10. When using the phone on heavy tasks like gaming and camera usage, the battery will last for a single day on a single charge. If you are using a fast charger bundled 30W, the smartphone will take about one hour to charge up completely. More like in the Xiaomi Mi 11, the reverse charging and wireless charge feature works just fine on the Mi 10 smartphone. A wireless charger bundled 30W from Xiaomi should be used to charge the device wirelessly.

Part 5: Mi 10 vs. Mi 11: pros and cons

  • ALSO:A2552 Battery for Apple Watch Series 7 45MM
  • The Apple Watch 7 replaced the Watch 6 as the premium model in Apple’s wearable range for , joining the Watch SE and Watch 3 for those wanting a second screen to complement their iPhone. It’s wasn’t that much of an upgrade over the previous model when we first encountered it – the main difference being the screen; which is 20% larger. Even so, it’s still finds a place in our best Apple Watch feature. If your heart remains set on the Series 7, you’re getting an ideal companion if you hate having to pull your iPhone out of your pocket to check your notifications, as well a decent fitness tracker. You’re also getting good heart rate monitoring and a range of useful apps, all wrapped up in an attractive package.
  • Available in five colors, and with that larger screen, everything is slightly more visible than on the previous Watch 6 or SE. It also retains the 6’s always-on display functionality, meaning you don’t need to raise your wrist to see the time (something that neither the Watch SE or Watch SE 2 offers).
  • Pros
    • +Brighter, larger screen than Series 6
    • +Faster charging
    Cons
    • -Workouts are varied, but basic
    • -Battery life needs to be longer
  • Apple Watch 7 design and display
  • 20% bigger screen than predecessor
  • Additional always-on display features
  • IP6X protected
Apple Watch 7 resting on felt roof

The Apple Watch design is probably the only change you’d notice when comparing this model to the Watch 6 or Watch SE – it’s slightly larger in the frame, and the display is around 20% bigger than on the older models (and a heckuva lot bigger than on the bezel-heavy Watch Series 3).

Apple Watch Series 7 next to Watch Series 3

What you won’t be able to discern when holding it for the first time is the improved robustness – with IP6X on board, this watch is now essentially dustproof as well as waterproof (to WR50, for open water swimming and dives), meaning dirt and other damaging particles can’t get under the frame.

The glass on top of the bright and vivid OLED display has also been hardened to reduce the chance of scratching or breaking – although we’ve never seen a sniff of damage on any of the watches we’ve reviewed over the years (beyond a deep nick we managed to push into the Watch 6), and the same was true here, with no scratches seen at all in our testing with the Watch.

We assume that this protection is designed to make the Watch 7 attractive to the more outdoorsy, white-water-rafting types, but then again they’re probably already looking at something like the Garmin Fenix range or, of course, the latest Apple Watch Ultra (budget permitting) which offer even better protection and more activity-tracking options.

Comparing the Watch 7 to the Watch 6, in a side-by-side comparison you can see the extra information that’s available – the larger screen (which carries through to the Watch 8) genuinely does make a difference to the amount of data you can see on screen, and it makes it easier to interact as a result.

Apple watch vs wacth 6 with fitness stuff on

There are five colors on offer with the Watch 7, which have fancy names like ‘Starlight’ but are essentially gray, green, blue, silver and red, however, the colors are more muted here than on previous models, and are more attractive as a result.

On the rear of the Watch 7 you’ve got the usual array of LEDs firing light under the skin – this can feel a little bulbous at times, but after a while you’ll barely notice it’s there.

Apple Watch 7 fitness

  • Built-in GPS and other sensors
  • ECG and SpO2 monitoring
  • Easy access to Apple Fitness Plus

The Watch 7 comes with a huge wealth of GPS sensors on it: GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, QZSS and Beidou, basically being able to see all the key satellites in the sky to get a quick lock and give a decent reading when you’re trotting around, putting it shoulder to shoulder with many other high-end running watches.*

Similarly, the readings from the heart rate monitor were almost identical to those from the chest strap we tested it against, rising and falling within a few seconds of the strap as we switched gears between a gentle trot and harder hill sessions or sprints.

However, this accuracy was only achieved when we pushed the Watch 7 further up the arm towards the elbow, which has been shown to provide better accuracy from the heart rate monitor. This is okay if you’ve got a Velcro sport band (although it will still slip forward or twist).

It’s hypnotic, and we found the mental state it put us in certainly does help with trying to stay calmer in this modern world. Combine this with one of the Fitness Plus workouts, which includes a guided walk or meditation to help you achieve a sense of calm during the day, and the Watch 7 is still one of the best wellbeing devices we’ve used.

The overhauled Mindfulness app really is one of the reasons to buy an Apple Watch – not necessarily the Watch 7, because these features are on every Apple Watch running WatchOS 8 or newer, but still.

We’ve yet to try a fitness watch that matches the pleasant vibration that tickles your wrist to tell you to breathe in and out calmly.

Apple Watch 7 software, hardware & performance

  • WatchOS 8 was an underwhelming update
  • Quick and snappy to navigate
  • Siri works 80% of the time

Apple Watch 7 battery life

  • One-day battery life
  • Multi-app use isn’t a huge drain
  • Takes roughly an hour to charge
  • Should I buy the Apple Watch Series 7?
  • You want to start getting healthier
The Watch 7 is a great fitness companion for those wanting to upgrade their fitness, both mentally and physically. It offers so many tracking options, and we found the mindfulness options genuinely refreshing.

The standard iPhone 14 remains the best value option of the flagship iPhone range, while adding some upgrades like an enhanced chipset and photo/video improvements. But without a higher display refresh rate or optical zoom camera, it’s still lacking features its rivals have offered for years.

  • Lack of SIM card slot will annoy someWith a larger display and battery, the iPhone 14 Plus offers part of what makes the iPhone 14 Pro Max so good, but without the expensive pro-grade features. Unfortunately, that also means it falls behind equivalent Android phones at the same price, just like its baby sibling.

  • iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus:
  • Design and display
  • Size is the biggest iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus difference: the iPhone 14 will have a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 14 Plus gets a larger 6.7-inch display. Accordingly, the iPhone 14 weighs just over 6 ounces, while the iPhone 14 Max tips the scales at a little over 7 ounces.
  • But that aside, the phones don’t differ much physically, and both mirror the shape and proportions of the iPhone 13and iPhone 13 Pro Max that came before.
  • The iPhone models get aluminum frames with glossy backs. And like with the previous gen iPhones, the iPhone 14 and 14 Max are IP68 water and dust resistant and have the Lightning port for charging (probably for the last time on iPhonesgoing by multiple iPhone 15 rumors).
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus stick with the same notch as the iPhone 13 series, which means it will very much be there but 25% smaller than theiPhone 12. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max have gotten rid of the full notch and have a pill-shaped cut-out for Face ID and the front camera instead.
  • In terms of display, the phones have skipped Pro Motion, which Apple has again reserved for the Pros. They instead have 60Hz, which is behind the times for mostAndroid phonesbut won’t be noticeable if you’re coming from any iPhone other than a 13 Pro or 13 Pro Max.
    • iPhone 14 Plus shown held in hand
    • They’re very similar in our display tests as well. Whether it’s color gamut, color accuracy or average brightness, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus perform within a couple of percentage points of one another. The only difference was during our HDR brightness tests, during which the iPhone 14 Plus is noticeably brighter.Row 0 – Cell 0

    • Both phones offer the same set of colors to pick from. The original options are Starlight, Midnight, blue, purple, and Product RED, while a new yellow option debuted in spring.
    • iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus:
    • CamerasThe iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus share camera hardware. That includes two 12MP cameras on the back, serving main and ultrawide purposes, and another 12MP camera on the front for your selfie-taking needs. There’s no telephoto camera or 48MP main sensor though, as those are Pro exclusives.
    • One new feature that you won’t find on previous iPhones is the Photonic Engine. This is Apple’s fancy name for a new image processing pipeline that focuses on getting better low-light shots.
    • iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus:
    • BatteryThis is where the difference between the two phones gets interesting. The iPhone 14 Plus lives up to its name and max out on the battery front, getting ahead of the iPhone 14.
    • The average battery life for the iPhone 14 during our testing (using a custom test to continuously browse the internet over 5G) was 9 hours and 28 minutes. The iPhone 14 Plus lasted 11 hours and 57 minutes, an excellent result.
    • As you might expect, the battery size gap between the two phones has an impact on charging speed. Using Apple’s 20W charger, the iPhone 14 charged to 54% in half an hour, and the iPhone 14 Plus charged to 46%.
    • iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus: Bottom lineThere’s not a big gap between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus — Apple saved that for between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. But there’s enough to make it worth considering carefully which phone you’re better off using. In a nutshell, the two phones differ in size, battery life and price. The iPhone 14 Plus arguably outshines the iPhone 14 overall by offering a big-screen iPhone experience for a more affordable price than the Pro Max. But since it doesn’t offer a lot more than the regular iPhone 14, maybe the smaller handset will still provide the best bang for your buck.
    • iPhone 14 vs iPhone 14 Plus:
    • Performance
    • In our iPhone 14 benchmarks, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus scored very similarly, as you’d expect from two phones with the same chip and RAM. The iPhone 14 Plus does seem to have an edge in some areas though, perhaps due to improved cooling thanks to its larger body.
    • Apple also gave both phones the same new safety features – Crash Detection and satellite-powered Emergency SOS. Hopefully, you’ll never need to automatically notify someone you’ve been in a vehicle collision or have gotten lost somewhere in the wilderness, but either of these phones will help you with that.
    • And what about storage space? Both phones offer the same there too, with capacities of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

Acer Predator Helios 18 review: a laptop with skull-shredding speed

Big, heavy and expensive, the Acer Predator Helios 18 brings together a collection of components that will challenge anything else on the market today

Our Verdict

This laptop is big, heavy and hot, and that’s because it’s supremely capable when it comes to both gaming and creative work. Having a GPU this powerful in a portable PC is going to be very useful for some users, but they’ll have to pay the same amount as a 16in MacBook Pro for the privilege, and that may send some into the warm embrace of Apple. If you can put up with the weight and the sound of the fans, this is a top desktop replacement machine that, thanks to its big screen, will be bent to all kinds of creative tasks. Yes, it is technically portable, but its weight and power draw count against it in this situation, and you should look elsewhere if you want something you can sling in a backpack.

  • Design & build
  • This is a big and heavy laptop. You’re going to need a bigger bag if you want to carry it around, but its biggest draw will be as a desktop replacement, whose only travel is between your desk and the cupboard when you tidy up. The machine’s gaming heritage is seen not only in the GPU-heavy specs, but also in the RGB lighting in the keyboard, screen-back logo and the bar below the hinge. Overall, it’s not too aggressive a design, being mostly black, and the lighting can be turned off. It also makes an obnoxious noise at startup, even if you’ve muted it in Windows – you’ll need to open Acer’s own control software to turn this off.
  • As a large laptop, fewer compromises have had to be made in terms of port placement, and they’re all readily accessible. Having the HDMI and charging connectors on the back of the chassis rather than the side is a good idea for a desktop replacement, as they mean fewer cables snaking across your desk to get in the way, but the Ethernet socket hasn’t joined them. It’s a spring-loaded slimline port that may start to annoy if in regular use, but as it’s ‘only’ a gigabit port, and the machine has Wi-Fi 7 on board that can potentially beat it in terms of speed, it may be redundant.
  • The weight of the Helios 18 means it’s very stable on a desk, and the extra screen size is always welcome. We suspect, however, that this laptop will spend much of its life hooked up to an external monitor and purchased in the interests of a tidy studio rather than portable gaming, but fortunately it excels in this role
  • Acer Predator Helios 18
  • Features
  • At the slightly-more-than-1440p 16:10 resolution that’s known as WQXGA, the mini-LED IPS screen on the Helios 18 does a good job of showing you what’s going on. An immediate upgrade would be to plug it into one of thebest 4K OLED screens, or maybe anice ultrawide, to really get the best out of the GPU, but as it is this is a well featured machine. For some reason, the Helios 18 refused to play nicely with the Datacolor Spyder software we use for checking a display’s brightness and gamut, so we’ll have to take Acer’s word for it that it can display 100% of the P3 colour gamut.
  • The extra space afforded by the 18-inch laptop’s chassis means there’s no cramped keyboard or tiny trackpad to worry about. There are full-size keys and a numpad, with none of the odd space-saving key layouts that can trip you up if you’re not used to them. There are no creative-software-specific features such as the ASUS dial on their Studiobooks, but plenty of USB ports to connect external devices to. The machine tops out at USB 3.2 Gen 2 – that’s the 10Gbps one for those not up on the confusing nomenclature – so there’s none of the usefulness of USB4 or Thunderbolt here, but you can use the Type-C ports in DisplayPort mode to complement the HDMI.
  • Battery life comes out at a bit more than four and a half hours in our tests, which keep the screen on and run through a loop of common computing tasks. That’s respectable for a gaming laptop, and will be helped by the larger chassis allowing for a bigger battery to be packed inside. Ramp up the power for gaming, or anything that uses the GPU, and you’ll see that figure drop like a stone.Who is it for? It’s for gamers, obviously, but laptops like this have huge potential for creative work. They can blitz through 2D and3D rendering, bring their power to bear on still andmoving images, and the generative AI tools inPhotoshop, orLightroomdenoising, are no problem at all. That huge GPU gives the Helios 18 an advantage over just about everything else when it comes to applying effects and keeping the screen moving, whether you’re rendering aliens to shoot at or just to look at.

  • Should I buy it?
  • Buy it if:•You want a desktop replacement
  • You need that GPUYou don’t mind the noise
  • Don’t buy it if:•
  • Actual portability is a concernSomething cheaper will do the job
  • You’d prefer a Mac
